Quick crib from the deep archives:
[S]hort ditty about Method #61 - Boycott of social affairs:
A group refusal to attend certain gatherings, such as receptions, concerts, and the like, as a means of dissociation from the occasion, certain individuals likely to be present, or the group that organized it.
An example near and dear to my heart involves Bill Russell, who died last month. After a couple of his Celtic teammates were denied service at a coffeeshop while they were in Kentucky for an exposition game back in '61, the Black players decided to go back to Boston rather than play in an atmosphere thick with racism (not that Boston has a great record on that front).
And they were supported in their actions:
The champion Celtics never again will play a basketball game in the South, or any other place where their Negro players might be humiliated as they were in Lexington. Ky., last night, owner Walter A Brown emphatically declared...
The other side of the same coin: Method #60 - Suspension of social and sports activities. No sense in playing nice with people who hate you.
Sometimes it's good to throw away your shot...
Selah.
