When George W. Bush looked into Putin's eyes and saw his soul, I wonder if he also saw the terrible wars in Georgia and Ukraine that America would ultimately enable. My latest, on America's post-9/11 failure with Russia. Link 👇 pic.twitter.com/el8g7titHe

Reminded me of a 20-year old post on a soon to be deleted blog:
We must pay attention because rising Russian nationalism and chauvinism is indeed very important and very dangerous. When taken along with Russia’s prosecution of the war in Chechnya and the Kremlin’s heavy-handed approach to the Chechen elections in early October, the arrest of Khodorkovsky and the dispute over Tuzla seem to paint a totalitarian portrait of Putin...
But really, does this have any bearing on those of us who live in the United States? Well, George W. Bush supposedly understands and gets along with Vladimir Putin because he “looked the man in the eye” and has “a sense of his soul.” Also according the Mr. Bush, Russia and the US are “allies in the war on terror”.
How comfortable are you having a President who has such a “broad and strong” relationship with an authoritarian leader like Putin? As Bush himself has said, “you can always judge the nature of a man by the company he keeps.”
Indeed.
